I help women facing divorce with complex marital estates—multiple investment accounts, retirement assets, inheritances, business interests—understand what they actually own, what a fair settlement really looks like, and whether it will sustain the life they want. Before they sign anything.

How I Got to This Point

Counterbalance began with a close family friend going through her own divorce. I watched from the outside as the litigation process failed her and her family, leaving her life in shambles.

What struck me most was the imbalance of power. It wasn’t that she couldn’t understand the financial information—she was never given the chance. She had spent those years focused on raising her family. Now, in the middle of the worst period of her life, she was being forced to make the biggest financial decisions she’d ever faced without full information.

I’ve been a financial planner since 2005, and in 2016 I began focusing on divorce planning because I kept seeing her story repeat: a woman who trusted her husband to handle the money is suddenly asked to evaluate a settlement covering everything they built together—with no framework, no information, and someone across the table who knows every number.

That’s why I started Counterbalance. The name is the mission: counter the financial chaos, counter the imbalance of power—so you can find your balance and take back control of your story.

From Player to Coach

I played football at Oklahoma State. Most of my time was spent on the practice field—Hedge field—preparing for fall Saturdays. What I learned there is that games aren’t won on Saturday. They’re won in preparation: knowing the game plan, understanding what’s coming, and having a coach who sees what you can’t.

In your divorce, you’re the one on the field. This is your story, your future, your fight. But no player wins alone. A good coach shows you your blind spots before they cost you. A good coach helps you play to your strengths instead of your fears. And a good coach has seen how this game plays out—so you always know what’s coming next, and nothing catches you off guard.

You may be asking yourself why you should trust another man with your future. Fair question. It’s exactly the right question—and it’s why I’m a coach, not another player calling the plays for you. A coach doesn’t take the field. A coach doesn’t hold the ball. I’m a fiduciary, legally bound to act in your interests—and my only compensation is the fee you pay me. No products to sell you, no referral kickbacks, no stake in any outcome except yours. Every credential below is independently verifiable. But more than that: my job is to put every number in front of you and teach you to read it yourself, until you don’t need to take anyone’s word for your own finances again—including mine. I help you so that you can believe in yourself. That’s what a coach is for.

And here’s what a good coach never forgets: the divorce is one game, but it isn’t the whole season. It’s not even the point of the season. The settlement you sign is simply the field position you carry into everything that comes after—the years of life still in front of you. My job isn’t just to help you win the game in front of you. It’s to make sure you walk off that field set up for the rest of the journey.

That’s the role I play, and I’ve spent years preparing for it. While at Oklahoma State, I became the first graduate of their Master’s program in Family Financial Planning—a program housed not in the business college, but in the college that studies the science of the human environment, including family systems and counseling. It trained me to look beyond the portfolio to the person. Because divorce is never just a financial event. It’s a family system coming apart, and the money decisions are tangled up with grief, guilt, and fear. A good coach understands both.

How I Work

I serve as your individual advocate—not a neutral splitting the difference. When your spouse built the spreadsheet, you need someone whose only job is your financial future.

The estates I work with are rarely simple. When the marital estate spans brokerage accounts, retirement accounts, insurance-based investments, real estate, and inherited money, an even split on paper is rarely even in reality—the tax treatment and accessibility of each asset can shift the true value by hundreds of thousands of dollars. That’s the level of analysis a spreadsheet at the kitchen table can’t do.

My work includes reviewing proposed settlements before you sign, flagging assets that may be separate property—like inheritances—so you can raise them with your attorney before it’s too late, analyzing the after-tax reality of every asset on the table, building your post-divorce budget and cash flow plan, and serving as the financial professional in Collaborative Divorce cases across Denton, Collin, Tarrant, and Dallas counties. My only compensation is the fee you pay me—I don’t sell products or earn commissions. My advice has one customer: you.

What I Believe

I live in Denton with my wife Rachel and our four children—Kyrie, Adelynn, Elias, and Titus. I believe every skill I have is God-given, to be used for His glory, and I want my work to reflect that. I believe all people are created in the image of God—everyone has inherent value and worth, no matter their lot in life, and they deserve to be treated that way.

And I believe that of whom much is given, much is expected. That conviction made me a two-time Academic All-American. It’s what gets me out of bed each morning. And it’s why I want Counterbalance to be an agent of change in the lives of women and in this community—helping others discover their own why, and use their resources to pursue it wholeheartedly.
